Bitcoin never closes. The stock market does.
Bitcoin trades every hour of every day. The US stock market’s regular session is six and a half hours on weekdays. The spot bitcoin ETFs, and a lot of the money that trades bitcoin through them, run on the stock market’s clock, so when it is shut there are fewer buyers and sellers around. Prices can move further on less, and a quote can print where nobody would normally trade.
The two clocks, in Pacific time
| Market | Pacific | Eastern |
|---|---|---|
| Spot bitcoin (Coinbase and other exchanges) | Every hour, every day | Never closes |
| US stocks, regular session | 6:30 AM to 1 PM PT, Mon to Fri | 9:30 AM to 4 PM ET |
| US stocks, pre-market | 1 to 6:30 AM PT | 4 to 9:30 AM ET |
| US stocks, after hours | 1 to 5 PM PT | 4 to 8 PM ET |
| US stocks, closed | 5 PM to 1 AM PT weeknights, weekends, holidays | 8 PM to 4 AM ET |
| CME bitcoin futures | Sun 3 PM PT to Fri 2 PM PT, a 60-minute break daily at 2 PM PT | Sun 6 PM to Fri 5 PM ET |
Stock sessions: NYSE Extended Hours FAQ, August 2026 and Federal Register: Nasdaq 23-hour trading rule, approved Apr 15, 2026. Holidays and 1 PM ET early closes: ICE: NYSE Group 2026, 2027 and 2028 holiday and early closings calendar. CME hours: CME Group: Micro Bitcoin futures fact card. Eastern and Pacific change their clocks on the same dates, so the three-hour gap holds all year.
Why the closed hours matter
Less of the market is awake. Kaiko found the weekend share of bitcoin trading volume fell from 28% in 2019 to 16% in 2024, and tied the drop to the spot ETFs: their trading only happens while the stock market is open, and market makers put their activity where the ETF flow is (The Block, citing Kaiko: bitcoin weekend trading at an all-time low after the ETF approvals, Jun 30, 2024). The same report notes that ETF creations and redemptions buy and sell bitcoin in the 3 to 4 PM New York fixing window, a weekday afternoon.
Thin books move further. With fewer resting orders, one market order can walk the price through several levels before it fills, and a quote can sit far from the last trade until someone replaces it. That is true on a bitcoin exchange and it is true on a Kalshi contract that tracks bitcoin.
Futures stop, spot does not. CME bitcoin futures pause from Friday 5 PM ET to Sunday 6 PM ET (CME Group: Micro Bitcoin futures fact card). Spot keeps trading through the weekend, so the futures can reopen on Sunday at a different price than they closed at on Friday. Traders call that the CME gap.
What changes on December 6, 2026
Nasdaq and NYSE Arca plan to add an overnight session from 9 PM to 4 AM ET, 6 PM to 1 AM PT, on Sunday to Thursday nights, which makes the weekday trading day about 23 hours long (Bitcoin.com News: Nasdaq sets Dec. 6 launch for nearly 23-hour trading, Aug 18, 2026; NYSE Extended Hours FAQ, August 2026). Nasdaq’s night session only starts once the consolidated price feeds can carry it (Federal Register: Nasdaq 23-hour trading rule, approved Apr 15, 2026). Weekends stay closed. We will check this page against the launch and date the change here when it happens.
A worked example: our $87,000 bitcoin pick
Exclusive Tuna bought NO on bitcoin finishing Friday, Sep 25 at or above $87,000, at 56¢, with a resting sell at 80¢. Kalshi settled the market NO. Here is the week in three hours, with the stock market’s status beside each one.
| Hour | US stock market | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Tue, Sep 22, 10 to 11 PM PT | Overnight, closed | Deepest point while the position was held: the NO bid fell to 44¢, 12¢ under the 56¢ entry. Bitcoin traded $86,415 to $87,172, right around the contract’s $87,000 line. |
| Wed, Sep 23, 7 to 8 AM PT | Regular session | The 80¢ target traded: NO printed up to 86¢ while bitcoin traded $83,799 to $85,933. Bitcoin’s widest hour of the week, in our read, came with the stock market open. |
| Thu, Sep 24, 2 to 3 AM PT | Pre-market | After the plan was out: one hour showed a 30¢ NO bid, then closed at 94¢. Bitcoin sat at $82,709 to $83,720, thousands under the line. Nothing about bitcoin explains a 30¢ bid. A thin book does. |
A “bid” here is what the NO contracts would have sold for right then. The plan and its grade are on the pick’s own page.
What to do with it
- Rest your sell order. A limit order sitting on the book fills at your price whenever the market reaches it, at 2 AM or 2 PM. That is the point of resting it.
- Check the bid and the spread before selling in a quiet hour. A market sell gets whatever the book holds right then, and overnight it may hold very little.
- Read a strange print with the volume beside it. A price with almost no contracts behind it is a quote, not a verdict on bitcoin.
- Size for the thin hours. A position you can hold through a quiet-hour dip is one you never have to sell into it. Bankroll and units
Questions people ask
Does bitcoin ever stop trading?
No. Spot bitcoin trades every hour of every day on exchanges like Coinbase. What stops is the US stock market, and with it the spot bitcoin ETFs and a large share of the money that trades bitcoin through them.
What hours is the US stock market open, in Pacific time?
The regular session runs 6:30 AM to 1 PM PT, Monday to Friday. Pre-market runs 1 to 6:30 AM PT and after hours 1 to 5 PM PT. Between 5 PM and 1 AM PT on weeknights, all weekend and on market holidays, US stock exchanges are closed.
Why is bitcoin quieter on weekends?
Kaiko, reported by The Block, found the weekend share of bitcoin trading volume fell from 28% in 2019 to 16% in 2024, and tied it to the spot ETFs: ETF trading only happens while the stock market is open, so market makers put their activity into weekdays.
What changes on December 6, 2026?
Nasdaq and NYSE Arca plan an overnight session from 9 PM to 4 AM ET (6 PM to 1 AM PT), Sunday to Thursday nights, which makes the weekday trading day about 23 hours long. Weekends stay closed.
