Bitcoin perps on Kalshi the real leverage and what being wrong costs
Kalshi lists a bitcoin perpetual future. The leverage is not the 50× you see on offshore venues. On September 24, 2026 at 11:45 AM PT it was 6.84× on the long side for a $1,000 position and 6.66× for $1,000,000, and it falls as your position gets bigger. This page shows one position, opened at $75,000 on September 16 and priced on September 24, at three stake sizes, and the price at which every one of them is closed out.
The leverage is size-dependent, and the long side gets more than the short side
Kalshi publishes a live leverage estimate per market, and it is not one number. It steps down as the position grows, and it is different for longs and shorts. Read from Kalshi's own /margin/markets endpoint at 11:45 AM PT on September 24, 2026:
| Position notional | Long | Short |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 6.8394× | 6.3804× |
| $10,000 | 6.8333× | 6.3752× |
| $100,000 | 6.8031× | 6.3488× |
| $1,000,000 | 6.6559× | 6.2205× |
Two things follow. A million-dollar long gets 2.7% less leverage than a thousand-dollar one, so size works against you before the market does. And the long side is consistently cheaper to hold than the short side here, on this market, on that day, by about 0.46×.
These numbers move. The ones above were read once, on September 24, 2026 at 11:45 AM PT, and this page doesn't update them. Kalshi's own learn page said 5.8× on a day its API returned 6.39×, so the leverage on your own order ticket is the one that counts.
A $75,000 long, eight days later
This is a worked example, not a call we made. PM Countdown published no position at $75,000 and this is not a record of one. It is arithmetic on two public prices: what the market did, and what the leverage was. Bitcoin's low was $74,888 on 15 September and $74,912 on 16 September, so $75,000 was a price you could have traded. Everything below follows from that and nothing else.
| Margin | Leverage | Notional | Value on Sep 24 | Gain | Closed out at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 6.8394× | $684 | $185.66 | +$85.66 | $64,034 |
| $2,000 | 6.8333× | $13,667 | $3,711.71 | +$1,711.71 | $64,024 |
| $5,000 | 6.8333× | $34,166 | $9,279.28 | +$4,279.28 | $64,024 |
Bitcoin moved +12.52% from $75,000 to $84,393.59. At 6.84× that is +85.7% on margin in eight days.
Before funding. Kalshi charges funding on a perpetual every eight hours, at 9:00 PM, 5:00 AM and 1:00 PM PT, so this hold had twenty-four charges. Each one is capped at 2% either way, a rate under 0.01% is set to zero, and when the rate is positive longs pay shorts (Kalshi Help Center, updated June 3, 2026). The rate for these eight days isn’t in the endpoint we read, so every figure above is gross. We won’t publish a net number until we can cite the rate for these dates.
The same leverage that made $85 would have taken all $100
At 6.8394×, your margin is 14.62% of the notional. That is the whole distance between you and zero. A 14.62% move against a long opened at $75,000 puts it at $64,034, and that is where it closes, not where it starts hurting.
Bitcoin has not been at $64,034 since August. But it does not need to revisit a price to take the position; it only needs to move that far. This cycle has already done it, twice over:
- −30.3%, 6 May 2026 ($82,814) to 1 July 2026 ($57,718)
- −14.62%, the move that closes this position
A drawdown the size of the one this cycle printed between May and July would have closed a $75,000 max-leverage long before bitcoin got anywhere near the cycle low. The 8-day gain and the total loss come from the same dial. Nothing about the last eight days makes the next eight safer.
The short-dated trade from the same week
The prediction-market version of this question settled on Friday, September 25, 2026: would bitcoin be under $87,000?
- Bitcoin printed $87,397 on 21 September and $87,283 on 23 September, above the level twice in three days.
- It sat at $84,394 on September 24, about 3.0% below the line.
That is the difference between the two instruments on this page. The perpetual has no expiry and closes you out at $64,034. The Friday contract has a fixed downside, what you paid, and a known settlement date. The full write-up on the under-$87,000 trade has the entry, the target and the grade.
Questions
What is Kalshi's maximum leverage on bitcoin?
6.8394× on the long side at $1,000 notional, read from Kalshi's /margin/markets endpoint on 24 September 2026. It falls to 6.6559× at $1,000,000 notional. The short side is lower, 6.3804× at $1,000. Kalshi's own learn page has quoted 5.8× on a day its API returned 6.39×, so treat any single published figure as dated.
What price does a bitcoin perp get liquidated at?
Margin at 6.8394× is 14.62% of notional, so a long opened at $75,000 is closed out around $64,034. That assumes zero maintenance margin; Kalshi's actual maintenance requirement will trigger it sooner, and that figure is not in the public API.
How often is funding charged?
Every eight hours, at 9:00 PM, 5:00 AM and 1:00 PM PT. Each charge is capped at 2% either way, a rate under 0.01% is set to zero, and when the rate is positive longs pay shorts. Over an eight-day hold that is twenty-four charges. The rate for these dates isn’t in the endpoint we read, so the returns on this page are gross of funding.
Is bitcoin in a bull market?
Bitcoin was $84,394 on September 24, 2026, up 46% from the 1 July 2026 low of $57,718, and it made a higher high at $87,397 on 21 September. It is also 33% below its cycle high of $126,296, set on 6 October 2025. The $97,964 print on 14 January 2026 was a lower high inside the decline, not the top. Peak to trough this cycle is −54.3%. A daily close below $74,888 breaks the sequence of higher lows this read depends on.
Not advice. PM Countdown publishes trades and education for information. It isn't financial advice, we aren't an exchange, and we don't hold money or take trades. Leveraged products can lose more than they gain and are not suitable for most people.
