Help, limits and the right to stop

Responsible gambling

If trading or betting has stopped being fun, free and confidential help is a phone call, a text or a chat away, any time. The numbers come first on this page, then the tools and the habits.

Call or text

1-800-GAMBLER

Free, confidential, 24/7. Talk about your own gambling or someone else's.

Call, text or chat

1-800-MY-RESET

The National Council on Problem Gambling's helpline, adopted Jan 29, 2026. Chat at 1800myreset.org NCPG.

In crisis

988

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988 any time. If you're in immediate danger, call 911.

NCPG says the old 1-800-522-4700 line stays active and states are adopting 1-800-MY-RESET at different speeds, so some state materials still list 1-800-GAMBLER. Both reach trained help.

NCPG guideline, word for word

It's okay not to bet.

No market needs you. Skipping a day, a week or for good costs nothing. On this site, "no trade" is the most common right answer, and your learning streak has freezes so a day off is never a penalty.

Six guidelines

NCPG's rules, in plain words

The National Council on Problem Gambling repeats these before every big sporting event NCPG.

  1. Set time and money limits

Decide both before you start, and stop when you reach either one. Lesson 04 has a worksheet.

  2. Only bet what you can afford to lose

Never use money meant for rent, bills or savings. Lesson 01 shows how to size a bankroll.

  3. Only use licensed operators

Regulated apps have to offer protection tools and follow rules on age and advertising.

  4. Don't bet while impaired

Not after drinking, and not when you're angry, upset or exhausted.

  5. It's okay not to bet

Sitting out is a complete decision. It doesn't need a reason.

  6. Know how to get help

Keep 1-800-GAMBLER and 1-800-MY-RESET in your phone. Help is free, confidential and open all the time.

Warning-sign self-check

Nine honest questions

These are common warning signs, the kind taught by programs like GameSense GameSense. This is not a diagnosis or a medical test. Your answers stay in this browser tab. They aren't saved, scored or sent anywhere.

Self-check

Not a diagnosis
Do you trade or bet more money, or for longer, than you planned?
Have you raised your stakes to get the same feeling as before?
After a loss, do you try to win it back quickly?
Have you used money meant for rent, bills or savings?
Have you borrowed money or sold something to trade or bet?
Do you hide how much you trade or bet from people close to you?
Do you feel restless or irritable when you try to cut back?
Has it caused problems with work, sleep, money or relationships?
Do you trade or bet to escape stress or a low mood?

Protection tools

Let the app hold the line

Limits work best when a tool enforces them. Set these up on a calm day. Menu names change, so follow each app's own help page for the current steps.

Kalshi

Kalshi's Responsible Trading Hub covers personal funding caps (a limit on deposits), voluntary opt-outs (a break from trading for a period you choose), support through Birches Health, and the 988 crisis line Kalshi RT Hub.

  1. Open the Responsible Trading Hub.
  2. Set a funding cap equal to your monthly loss limit.
  3. If you need a break, choose an opt-out period.

Sportsbooks and state programs

Licensed sportsbooks offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion in their responsible gaming settings. Many state regulators also run self-exclusion programs. Colorado's Division of Gaming, for example, points bettors to set limits, take breaks and use self-exclusion Colorado.

Two lessons that help most

For family and friends

You can call the same helplines about someone else's gambling. You don't need their permission to ask for advice.

How this site handles it

Every page asks for 21+ and shows the helplines. This page has no age gate, no pop-ups, no sponsor and no paid links. Our learning streak never counts trades.
