A 90¢ favourite, thirteen hours at one price, and a fourth quarter that took it to 1¢

How it happened

Portland came into its last home game of an inaugural season at 16-26, having lost all three meetings with Golden State, the most recent 82-66 four days earlier. Golden State was 31-11 and already playoff-bound. The market gave Portland a 24¢ chance at tip-off and never moved off that view all day.

It held anyway. With 5:56 left in the fourth Portland led 68-65, and the price on Golden State, a contract that had not left a two-cent band in thirteen hours, printed 50¢. Golden State pushed back: nine minutes later the same contract traded as high as 96¢. The last trade on it printed at 1¢.

The league has not posted a box score yet, so the prices below are the only record of this game we can cite. They are Kalshi’s own trade history, not our reading of it.

Thirteen hours at 90¢

The band is the point. From five in the morning until the six o’clock hour, Kalshi’s price on Golden State never left a two-cent range. That is not a market drifting toward an opinion, it is a market that already had one and saw no reason to revise it. A contract that sits at 90¢ for thirteen hours is the closest thing a prediction market has to a settled view. What the fourth quarter did to it is below.

The nine minutes

Then the fourth quarter happened. Portland went ahead and the price did not step down, it fell through the floor. Nine minutes, from 8:49 to 8:58, is the entire story of this contract.

Five minutes and fifty-six seconds is a long time to hold a lead only if you are the team that has it. Golden State got the price back to 96¢ before the end, which is the part that does not show up in a final score: for a few minutes late on, the market thought the favourite had saved it.
