What's at stake

Las Vegas is 29-13 and third. Atlanta is 29-14 and half a game behind. Los Angeles is 16-26 and eliminated. The gap is not only in the standings, it is in what tonight is for: the Aces are playing for where they open the playoffs, and the Sparks are playing out a schedule.

The form matches the stakes. Las Vegas has won five in a row, by 37 and then by 21 over Seattle. Los Angeles has also won, beating Portland by 21 at home on Sunday. At home the Aces are 14-7, and on the road the Sparks are 8-13.

What a price has to answer. None of that is news to a market. A team this far clear of its opponent is priced that way, and the question on a contract is never whether Las Vegas is the better team. It is whether the price has gone further than the gap has.

Two positions, opposite sides

The desk has taken both ends of this game. That is not a hedge and it is not indecision: one is a trade on the price moving, the other is a trade on the margin. They can both win, and they can both lose.

  • If not sold0¢Kalshi settled No at 9:22 PM PT
  • Bought at7¢1,341 contracts on $100

This is not a call that the Sparks win. At 7¢ you risk seven to make ninety-three, and the position does not need the game to end a particular way. It needs the price to move, which a contract this cheap does on a run rather than on a result. Tuna has traded this exact shape on this exact team: the Sparks at 52¢ on 20 September peaked at 99¢ before the game finished.

What it costs to be here

$100 buys 1,341 contracts, and the entry fee alone is $6.12. That is more than six per cent of the stake gone before anything happens, because a cheap contract means a large position and the fee is charged per contract. The sell order now sits at 14¢ rather than 10¢, which is the same trade held for a larger move: it clears both fees and returns $76.44 instead of $25.66, and it is meaningfully less likely to fill.

What would make this wrong. Las Vegas leads from the opening minutes and the price never trades above 7¢. There is no stop on a contract this cheap that is worth setting, so the plan is the target or the settlement, nothing in between.

  • The planSold at 80¢+$22.50Sell order filled 7:22 PM PT. Bought at 65¢ before tip-off.
  • If not sold0¢Kalshi settled No at 9:22 PM PT
  • Bought at65¢150 contracts on $100

The board prices Las Vegas to win at 93¢ and to win by thirteen or more at 65¢. Read together, that is the market saying the Aces cover this margin about seventy per cent of the times they win. Last week, of the ten WNBA favourites priced at 80¢ or above, all ten won and eight won by thirteen or more.

The shape of the sample is the argument

Of the twelve favourites that won by more than seven last week, the smallest winning margin was twelve. There was almost nothing between plus five and plus twelve. Women’s basketball chalk in that week either ran away with the game or lost it, which is what makes the margin rung cheap relative to the win market rather than simply riskier than it.

Las Vegas has a reason to push, and it runs out on Thursday

The Aces are 29-13 and third. Atlanta is 29-14 and half a game back with one game left, at New York on Wednesday. Golden State is 31-11 and two clear with two left. Las Vegas has two games of its own: tonight, and Thursday at Phoenix. So the seed is not decided, the window to move it is two games wide, and tonight is the one against a team that is 16-26 and eliminated. A side in that position does not manage minutes through the first three quarters. It goes at the opponent it is supposed to beat and it tries to be done early.

That is the whole case for the rung rather than the win. At 93¢ the market has already paid for Las Vegas winning. What it has not fully paid for is a team with something to settle treating the first half of a home game against an eliminated opponent like it counts, because for them it does.

A big lead and a big win are two different trades

Kalshi settles this contract on the final margin, not the largest one. A twenty-two point third quarter that finishes plus eleven settles this at zero. But it does not have to settle to pay: the 80¢ sell order fills while the lead is big, because that is when this rung prices close to certain. So the seeding argument is an argument for the exit first and the settlement second, and the plan is written that way.

What it costs, and what it needs

$100 buys 150 contracts for $99.89, fees in. The break-even is 66.6%, not 65, because the fee has to be cleared before the contract does anything.

What would make this wrong, and the series says it might. These teams have met three times and only one of those cleared this rung: Las Vegas by 27 in May, Las Vegas by 10 in June, and in the one meeting played in Las Vegas the Sparks won it 101-95. The Aces lead the series 2-1 and have covered thirteen once in three tries. The specific loss from here is the seed being settled inside the game rather than by it: Las Vegas is up twenty, the result is not in doubt by the fourth, the starters sit, and a twenty-point lead becomes a twelve-point win. Same thesis, no payout.

Update · Tuesday, Sep 22, 2:07 PM PT

The volume arrived. When this page went up on Sunday the game market had traded 166 contracts on Las Vegas and none at all on Los Angeles. It has now traded 28,124 on the Sparks side and 52,855 on the Aces side, and both plans are still open at the prices they were posted at: Los Angeles is 6¢ bid and 7¢ ask, over 12.5 is 64¢ bid and 65¢ ask.

One thing changed in the plan itself. Exclusive Tuna has raised the sell order on Los Angeles from 10¢ to 14¢ while the position is still open at the 7¢ entry. That is the same trade asked to do more work: it takes a fill from +$25.66 to +$76.44, and it is less likely to fill at all. The entry, the contract count and the grading are unchanged, and the ledger carries the amendment.

The spread book has also picked a favourite rung. Over 15.5 has traded 12,422 contracts against 978 on the over 12.5 the desk holds, so the deeper rung is where the liquidity sits if either side of this needs to be exited in size rather than left to settle.

Ten games is a week, not a base rate. Every frequency quoted above comes from the sixteen settled games in last week’s archive, ten of which had a favourite priced at 80¢ or above. One different result moves those percentages by ten points, and neither position is being presented as something a sample that size could prove. Volume and price figures in the update were read from Kalshi at the time stamped on it; the prices in the cards above are read live.

Trading it: the case each way

The desk is on both sides of this game, and the two plans are above. What follows is the argument on each side, stripped of the positions, so you can write your own number before you look at the price again.

Reasons to look

Los Angeles has won three of its last five. A side already eliminated owes nothing to a game plan, and that is harder to price than a record is.

Reasons to stay out

The win market is deep now, but the margin ladder is not. The rung the desk holds has traded under a thousand contracts against more than twelve thousand on the over 15.5, so on the spread, getting out in size is harder than getting in.

Whatever you decide, write the entry, the sell target and the hold rule before tip-off, and remember the fee is largest near 50¢. How the fee works
