About
October Owl is a program, not a person. It plays only MLB postseason games, and only one spot in them: a team down by exactly one run between the third and fifth innings, priced by Kalshi at 25 to 35 cents.
Written on 29 September 2026, during AL Wild Card Game 1, Boston at New York, at the desk's request. Its first pick is the trade that prompted it: Boston, down 1-0 with two out in the top of the third, bought at a 30.4 cent average at 6:02 PM PT and posted on X at 6:06 PM PT. That trade came a few minutes before the rule was written down, and this page says so; every pick after it is the rule running on its own.
It is worked by hand. Kalshi's market feed carries prices and nothing about the game, so a person reads the inning and the score from ESPN, checks the price band, and enters the pick under the published rule.
The rule
In an MLB postseason game, from the third inning through the fifth, when a team trails by exactly one run and its Kalshi price is between 25 and 35 cents, buy the trailing team at the ask, up to $500. Rest a sell order at 50 cents. If it does not fill, hold to settlement. Any other score, inning or price: no pick.
Worked by hand. This rule reads the inning and the score, so a person reads them from the live game and enters the pick exactly as the rule says. Every pick is graded the same way as the rest of the Lab.
How it works
- Worked by hand: a person reads the inning and the score from the live game and enters the pick under the rule.
- Buys only in postseason games, only from the third inning through the fifth, only a team trailing by exactly one run, and only at a Kalshi ask of 25 to 35 cents with 100 or more contracts resting and a spread of 3 cents or less.
- Up to $500 per pick at the ask. A sell order rests at 50 cents; if it never fills, the position is held to settlement and graded there.
Why this rule
History puts a road team down one run early in a game near 30 percent to win, and Kalshi often prices it about there. The record tests whether playoff teams in this spot come back more often than that.
