Buffalo are deep at 64 cents and still 5 cents wide

The board has the best record on tonight's card at a sensible number. It also has 431 contracts resting behind a quote you cannot leave cheaply.

What this game is

Start with the rule, because the rule is the reason. Under the CBA that took effect this season, any player with 100 or more career NHL games may appear in only two of a club's four September dates. Clubs must still dress at least 8 veterans, but that test is far wider and counts 400 combined NHL and AHL games, first-round picks from 2022 to 2026 and second-rounders from 2024 to 2026. Both of these teams have already played since 19 September.

So the sheet you would price this game around may not be the sheet that skates at KeyBank Center. That is a different objection from saying September hockey does not count. It is a written eligibility limit, and it lands on exactly the players a market builds a number from.

Buffalo are 64 cents to the ask against a 59 cent bid, with 431 contracts resting at that ask. Columbus are 38 cents asked against 37 bid, with 205 resting. Volume is 227 on the home side and 83 on the road side, so this quote has been traded and not merely posted. For a club that went 50-23-9 last season and 26-10-5 at home, 64 cents is not an eccentric number.

The problem is the 5 cent gap. Pay 64 and the best standing bid behind you is 59, so you are 5 cents underwater before a puck is dropped. Depth is not tightness. A 431 contract queue tells you people are willing to stand there at that price. It does not tell you that you can leave anywhere near the price you paid. Kalshi's entry fee is ceil(0.07 x contracts x price x (1 - price)) in cents and settlement carries no fee, so the spread, not the fee, is the expensive part here.

The two ladders

This is the one goal ladder on the slate with a genuinely two-sided market. Columbus at Buffalo over 5.5 goals is quoted 45 bid against a 66 cent ask, with roughly 2,000 contracts on each side. That is 21 cents wide. Elsewhere on KXNHLTOTAL most of the 80 open rungs sat at a 99 cent ask against a 6 cent bid, which is a placeholder rather than a price, and the goal-margin ladder KXNHLSPREAD had no volume on 38 of its 40 rungs. A 21 cent spread is a toll you pay twice, once going in and once coming out, and that is before you ask whether a September total is knowable at all.

Hot players, honestly

If you are tempted by camp form, hold the number against the record. Of 138 skaters who posted an on-ice shooting percentage above 11% in a season, only 5, or 3.6%, did it again the next year. PDO, which is on-ice shooting plus on-ice save percentage, pulls back toward 100 for the same reason. So two loud nights from someone like Tage Thompson is information about two nights. What carries further is expected goals, which beats past goals at predicting future scoring once you have more than about 20 games and reaches roughly 0.75 by 70. Nobody has 20 games yet.

Home ice, measured

Buffalo went 26-10-5 at KeyBank Center last season, the strongest home mark of the four hosts this desk has written up tonight. League-wide the baseline is more modest: home teams won about 54.5% and scored about 0.3 goals more per game across the 1979-80 to 2011-12 span, clearly smaller than the NBA's 60.5% over the same years. It narrows when games are close, falling to about 53% in one-goal games against 59% overall, and roughly 57.5% of NHL games are one-goal games. A crowd effect does show up in the penalty data. Across 3,278 regular-season games from 2019 to 2021, away teams drew significantly more penalties with a crowd present, and that effect vanished in empty arenas.

The read and the rule

Leaning Buffalo on talent, taking nothing on price

I think Buffalo are the better club and I think 64 cents is a fair guess at how much better. That is exactly why I am not buying. When the number is roughly right and the exit sits 5 cents away, you are paying for the privilege of agreeing. I would rather write the opinion down than pay 5 cents to hold it.

What would change it: A Buffalo bid inside 3 cents of the ask, with the queue still that deep, and I would look again.

No pick

Buffalo ask 64 cents, bid 59 cents, spread 5 cents against a 3 cent ceiling. Depth of 431 and volume of 227 cleared their floors. Rejected on spread.

Crease Angle writes the read. The agent applies a published rule and records the cent that stopped it. Across all ten games on this slate the rule returned no position at all at 12:55 UTC, nine of them on the spread cap. That was a fact about the board at that minute, not about the slate, and the block below is the same board read again. Neither verdict is a position in the ledger.

The case each way

Reasons to look

If you want a market where both sides have actually traded, this is one of the few on the card. 227 contracts have gone through on Buffalo and 83 on Columbus, and there is a real queue at the home ask. Reading how a deep book behaves in a thin week is worth doing even when you never touch it.

Reasons to stay out

The number looks sensible, which removes the reason to be involved. You would pay 5 cents of spread to hold an opinion the board already holds, on a roster nobody has published, under an appearance cap that thins both sides. There is no edge in agreeing loudly.

Questions

What time is Columbus at Buffalo?

Puck drop is 23:00 UTC, which is 7pm Eastern and 4pm Pacific, at KeyBank Center. That start time comes from the NHL API rather than the exchange, whose occurrence field runs about 3 hours late. Every game on this card is a 7:00 PM local start.

Is there a trade in this game?

No. Our published gate asks for at least 100 contracts resting at the ask, at least one completed trade, a spread of 3 cents or tighter, and a price between 50 and 80 cents. Buffalo clear three of those four conditions. The 5 cent spread fails the fourth, so the desk takes no position and neither does the machine.

Why does the over 5.5 goals rung matter here?

Because it is the only total on the slate with real size on both sides, roughly 2,000 contracts each way. It is still quoted 45 bid against 66 asked. Our own count of this month's games through 21 September found 115 goals in 22 games, 5.23 a game, against 6.29 a game across the 2025-26 regular season. That is 22 games, which is small, but it points the opposite way to the folklore.

Does Buffalo's 50-23-9 mean anything tonight?

It tells you which club was better over 82 games last season. It does not tell you who dresses at KeyBank Center this evening, because the 100 game cap limits how often established names can appear across a 4 game September. Treat the record as background on the organisation, not as a read on the sheet.
