The widest quote on the board, and almost nothing behind it

Pittsburgh are 63 cents with a 57 cent bid. One contract rests at Detroit's ask. Both numbers describe a market that has not decided anything yet.

What this game is

The CBA that came in this season caps any player with 100 or more career NHL games at two September appearances. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are both a very long way past 100 games, so each is limited to two of Pittsburgh's four dates, and both clubs have already played since 19 September. The floor of 8 veterans per club can be met without either of them, because that definition stretches to 400 combined NHL and AHL games, first-round picks from 2022 to 2026 and second-rounders from 2024 to 2026.

This is the page where the rule bites hardest. More than in any other game on the card, what you would be buying at PPG Paints Arena is an unpublished answer to a question about who has already been used. Nobody has told the market, and the market has priced it regardless.

What the market says

Pittsburgh Penguins Home57¢63¢6¢127318

Pittsburgh are 63 cents asked against a 57 cent bid. That 6 cent gap is the widest home quote anywhere on tonight's card. There are 127 contracts resting at the home ask and 318 traded, so size and history are both present. Detroit are 39 cents asked against 37 bid, and that ask has exactly 1 contract behind it.

One contract is not a market. It is one person's willingness to sell, and it can be lifted by an order worth less than a coffee. On the home side the arithmetic is simpler and worse. Buy at 63 and the highest bid you could sell into is 57. Settlement on Kalshi costs nothing, and a tie in the win market resolves every contract at 50 cents, but neither of those facts pays for 6 cents of spread.

The two ladders

KXNHLSPREAD is shaped as a club winning by over 1.5 or over 2.5 goals. Pittsburgh over 1.5 goals shows 34 bid against a 45 cent ask, with 10 contracts traded. That is 11 cents wide on a rung that has changed hands ten times all day. It is the most active margin quote involving either of these clubs, and it is still nearer an opinion poll than a price. Across the whole ladder 38 of 40 open rungs carry no volume at all, and most of the 80 total-goals rungs sat at a 99 cent ask against a 6 cent bid, which is a placeholder left on a screen.

Hot players, honestly

Goaltending is where this logic usually gets challenged, so take the numbers first. Across 48,431 playoff shots and 93 goaltenders between 2008 and 2016 there was no evidence of a hot hand, and recent strong play trended slightly negative for the next shot. Save percentage above expected carries at about 0.12 from one season to the next, and goals saved above average per 60 at about the same. No club here has named anyone for tonight in any case. On the skater side expected goals is the better guide once a sample exists, beating past goals past roughly 20 games and reaching about 0.75 by 70, though even that is contested: a 2020 counter-analysis argued Corsi still edges expected goals. Either way, Lucas Raymond has no 2026-27 sample at all.

Home ice, measured

Pittsburgh went 20-13-8 at PPG Paints Arena last season and 21-12-8 on the road, which is a club whose home ice barely registered in the standings. The 16 overtime losses matter to how you read that. Home sides won 56.6% of games decided in regulation and 54.2% in overtime across 10,534 games, but only 47.6% in the shootout, so the advantage actually reverses once you reach a skills competition. There is also a live academic argument that the apparent long decline in home advantage largely disappears once you adjust for the league's lower scoring, so any claim that home ice is finished should be treated as unresolved.

The read and the rule

Leaning Pittsburgh at home, buying nothing

I like the Penguins here for reasons that have nothing to do with the sheet, which is a warning about my own reasoning rather than a read. What I actually know is that 6 cents is the worst exit on the board, and that 1 contract sits at Detroit's ask. Take the other side at 39 and I am trading against a queue of one. Neither of those is a market I want to be inside on a Tuesday in September.

What would change it: Publish a Pittsburgh lineup and put a bid within 3 cents of the ask, and I will stop writing and start reading.

No pick

Pittsburgh ask 63 cents, bid 57 cents, spread 6 cents against a 3 cent ceiling. Price and depth both passed. Rejected on spread, the widest failure on the slate.

Crease Angle writes the read. The agent applies a published rule and records the cent that stopped it. Across all ten games on this slate the rule returned no position at all at 12:55 UTC, nine of them on the spread cap. That was a fact about the board at that minute, not about the slate, and the block below is the same board read again. Neither verdict is a position in the ledger.

The case each way

Reasons to look

The information gap here is unusually clean, which makes it a good page to study. You can watch a 6 cent quote and a 1 contract ask move the moment lineups are posted, and see how fast a thin book re-prices. That is a useful thing to have already seen before the season opens on 29 September.

Reasons to stay out

A 6 cent spread on an unpublished roster is the definition of paying to guess. The two players most likely to move this number can appear only twice across the whole of September, and the club has already used part of that allowance. There is nothing to be confident about and a measurable cost to taking part.

Questions

What time is Detroit at Pittsburgh?

The game starts at 23:00 UTC, 7pm Eastern and 4pm Pacific, at PPG Paints Arena. We take that from the NHL API, not from the exchange, whose occurrence field runs roughly 3 hours behind. All 10 games tonight are 7:00 PM local starts.

Is there a trade in this game?

No. Pittsburgh sit inside the price band at 63 cents, clear the 100 contract depth floor with 127 resting, and have traded 318 times. The spread is 6 cents against a ceiling of 3, so the gate fails them on the last condition. Detroit are not a candidate either, with 1 contract at the ask and a price beneath the band.

How does the 100 game rule change this game?

It caps any player with 100 or more career NHL games at two appearances across a 4 game September schedule. Crosby and Malkin are both far beyond that threshold. Pittsburgh have already played since 19 September, so what remains is a coaching decision about a very small number of dates, and it has not been announced.

Why is only 1 contract resting at Detroit's ask?

Because almost nobody wants to sell Detroit at 39 cents right now, and almost nobody needs to. 151 contracts have traded on the road side, so the market exists, but the standing offer is a single ticket. A queue of one can disappear on a trivial order, which makes the quoted 39 cents weaker evidence than it looks.
