What does a shootout actually settle?

Los Angeles lost 20 games past regulation last season, more than any club on tonight's card, which makes this the page for what the scoreboard does after 60 minutes.

What this game is

Start with the rule rather than the calendar. This season's CBA caps any player with 100 or more career NHL games at two preseason appearances, while the requirement to dress eight veteran players is met by a much broader group: 400 or more combined NHL and AHL games, first-round picks from 2022 through 2026, second-rounders from 2024 through 2026. The floor is real and it is also easy to reach without a marquee forward.

That is why a price on tonight is a price on an unknown team sheet, not a weak one. The regular season begins 29 September. Both clubs have already played since 19 September, both are inside a four-game September run, and nobody has announced who starts in goal. Nothing on this page is advice of any kind, and you must be 21 or older.

What the market says

Kalshi win market

Utah Mammoth36¢38¢2¢182306
Los Angeles Kings Home60¢64¢4¢321409

The board makes Los Angeles the home favourite at 64 cents, with Utah offered at 38. There are 321 contracts at the Kings ask and 409 have changed hands, so depth and trading are both comfortably above our floor. Utah is thinner but not empty at 182 and 306.

The gap is 60 bid against 64 ask. Four cents, one cent outside our limit, and that single cent is the whole decision. A rule that bends for a game you fancy is not a rule, it is a mood. Four of tonight's ten home books cleared the depth requirement and none of the ten cleared 3 cents, which tells you something about how the exchange is pricing a week nobody can model.

The two ladders

The goal-margin and total-goals ladders on this game are open but inert. Across the card there are 40 margin rungs with volume of zero on 38, and 80 total-goals rungs that mostly show a 99 cent ask sitting above a 6 cent bid. No rung here has traded enough to be called a price. Worth knowing before you look at any over: a shootout win is recorded as exactly one goal to the winner, so a scoreless game settles 1-0 and every total above 1.5 goals resolves against the over no matter how the 65 minutes looked.

Hot players, honestly

Adrian Kempe could put three past a camp roster tonight and the correct update to your view is close to nothing. The largest study we could find, 48,431 playoff shots across 93 goaltenders between 2008 and 2016, found no evidence of a hot hand, and recent strong play trended slightly negative for the next shot. What does travel forward is expected goals: past about 20 games it predicts future scoring better than past goals do, reaching roughly 0.75 by 70 games. Note that even this is contested, with a 2020 counter-analysis arguing Corsi still edges expected goals.

Home ice, measured

Crypto.com Arena did not do much for the Kings last season. They were 15-17-9 at home and 20-10-11 on the road, one of the few clubs on this card whose road column reads better. Their 20 overtime losses were the most of the twenty clubs on this card. That makes this the right building to say what actually happens past regulation: across 10,534 games, home sides took 56.6% in regulation, 54.2% in overtime and only 47.6% in the shootout. Home advantage does not shrink in the skills competition, it flips. Add that roughly 57.5% of NHL games are one-goal games, that home advantage falls to about 53% in those against 59% overall, and that year-to-year autocorrelation in overtime and shootout success is close to zero, and the Kings' 20 extra-time defeats stop looking like a trait.

The read and the rule

Leaning Los Angeles, hands off at 4 cents

My honest read is that the Kings are the better side here and that last season's home column flattered nobody. I do not think 20 overtime losses is a flaw you can price, because that column barely repeats from one year to the next. One cent too wide is still too wide, and I would rather be strict tonight than clever. Ask me again on 29 September.

What would change it: Los Angeles quoted at 61 by 64 with the same 321 resting, and this becomes a live conversation.

No pick

Los Angeles ask 64 cents, inside band. Resting depth 321 and volume 409 both pass. Bid 60 against ask 64 is a 4 cent spread, one cent past the 3 cent limit, so no position is taken.

Crease Angle writes the read. The agent applies a published rule and records the cent that stopped it. Across all ten games on this slate the rule returned no position at all at 12:55 UTC, nine of them on the spread cap. That was a fact about the board at that minute, not about the slate, and the block below is the same board read again. Neither verdict is a position in the ledger.

The case each way

Reasons to look

This is a well-populated book by the standards of the card, 321 at the ask and 409 traded, and the price sits in the range the desk normally works in. If you want to watch how a market handles a roster it cannot see, a liquid one is the place to do it.

Reasons to stay out

One cent outside a published limit is exactly the place where discipline is tested, and the cost is charged on entry and again on exit. Beyond that, the thing this page is about, what happens after 60 minutes, is close to random from season to season, so there is no edge to buy even if the quote tightened.

Questions

What time is Utah at Los Angeles?

02:00 UTC, which is 10pm ET and 7pm PT, a 7pm local start at Crypto.com Arena. That comes from the NHL API rather than the exchange, whose occurrence field is three hours behind on this slate. It is the latest window of the night, shared with Vegas at San Jose.

Is there a trade in this game?

No. Los Angeles satisfies the price band, the depth floor and the traded test, then misses the spread by one cent. The gate is written down in advance precisely so that a near miss stays a miss. Tonight it produced no picks across all ten games.

How does the exchange settle a shootout?

A shootout win is recorded as one goal to the winner, so a game that finishes scoreless through overtime settles 1-0 for market purposes. That matters for any total-goals rung. The win market's own rules also state that a tie resolves all markets at 50 cents.

Is home ice really about the ice?

Some of it is about the crowd. Across 3,278 regular-season games from 2019 to 2021 plus 547 playoff games, away teams drew significantly more penalties when spectators were present, Z equal to 3.729 with p of .001, and the effect vanished in empty arenas at Z of -.230. The commonly cited last-change advantage is asserted widely and, as far as we can find, measured nowhere.
