Eight storylines for Bills at Rams

Josh Allen’s last night at SoFi

The Rams beat the Bills 44-42 at SoFi Stadium on December 8, 2024, the night Josh Allen became the first player in the Super Bowl era to run for three touchdowns and throw for three in one game. He had 342 passing yards and 82 rushing yards without a turnover, and Buffalo still lost after trailing by 17 points twice in the third quarter. Matthew Stafford watched from the other sideline: “He’s a one-of-a-kind type player at the quarterback position.” AP via ESPN

Buffalo comes in off its first loss

The Bills are 3-1. They won 36-31 at Houston, beat Detroit 41-31 and the Chargers 24-16 in Orchard Park, then lost 29-26 to New England. Buffalo has scored touchdowns on 11 of 16 red-zone trips and allowed touchdowns on 11 of 16. ESPN Bills schedule · AP via ESPN

A Rams defense that has smothered two offenses

Los Angeles ranks second in the NFL in total yards allowed (247.5 a game) and passing yards allowed (145.5). The Rams are the first team since the 1949 Eagles to outgain an opponent by 200 yards in three straight games, including 415 to 172 at Philadelphia. They also struggled to contain San Francisco and Denver. AP via ESPN

Kyren Williams finished Philadelphia

The Rams are 2-2: a 27-7 loss to San Francisco, a 28-6 win over the Giants, a 30-26 loss at Denver and a 24-20 win at Philadelphia. In that last one Kyren Williams ran for two touchdowns in the final four minutes, his first go-ahead, game-winning score in a fourth quarter, and caught a career-high 10 passes for 67 yards. ESPN Rams schedule · AP via ESPN

Puka Nacua is back, and Stafford’s interceptions

Nacua returned in Philadelphia after missing two games with hip and groin injuries and caught 9 passes for 125 yards. Stafford went 12 of 16 for 133 yards on the last two drives, but his two interceptions there gave him six in four games. He had eight in each of the previous two full seasons. AP via ESPN

A beat-up Bills defense

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee) was ruled out Saturday. At cornerback, Christian Benford (toe), Dee Alford (ankle) and practice-squad call-up Te’Cory Couch (hamstring) have all been dealing with injuries. On offense, receiver Joshua Palmer is out and DJ Moore is questionable with a shoulder. AP via ESPN · ESPN game page

Buffalo scores on the Rams

The Bills have scored at least 30 points in four straight games against the Rams and in eight of the past nine. In three trips to Los Angeles since the Rams moved back in 2016 they scored 30, 31 and 42. The series stands 9-6 to Buffalo. AP via ESPN

The line

DraftKings had the Rams by 3.5, with Los Angeles at -180, Buffalo at +150 and a total of 54.5, as read October 12. On Kalshi the Rams were 61¢ to sell and 62¢ to buy the same morning, about a 61% chance. ESPN odds (DraftKings)

Weeks 1-4 rushing: 13-57, 21-135, 24-154, 12-75.

421 yards on 70 carries, 6.0 a carry, and the Bills’ only real ball carrier: no other back has had more than one carry in a game. Kalshi had his 100+ rushing yards at 25¢ bid, 26¢ ask.

Keon Coleman, Bills WR

Weeks 1-4: 1-1, 6-63, 1-37, 6-116 on 16 targets.

His 116 yards against New England were the second-most of his career and his third 100-yard game. With Palmer out and Moore questionable, he is the outside receiver most likely to see volume.

Dalton Kincaid, Bills TE

Weeks 1-4: 5-130, 7-95, 2-38, 1-7 on 19 targets.

225 yards in the first two weeks, 45 in the last two. Kalshi had his 50+ receiving yards near a coin flip, 55¢ bid and 56¢ ask.

Matthew Stafford, Rams QB

22 catches for 390 yards. His two biggest games came while Nacua was out. Kalshi had his 70+ receiving yards at 44¢ bid, 45¢ ask.

Puka Nacua, Rams WR

Weeks 1 and 4: 5-74 on 9 targets, 9-125 on 12. Missed Weeks 2 and 3.

Back from hip and groin injuries with 125 yards in Philadelphia. Kalshi had his 100+ receiving yards at 45¢ bid, 46¢ ask, the most expensive 100-yard line on the board.

Where Bills vs Rams gets decided

Stafford’s volume against a thin Buffalo secondary

The Rams throw more than almost anyone: 165 pass attempts in four games, 41.3 a game, for 290.3 net passing yards a game. Stafford completed 62 passes in the last two games alone, 30 of 55 at Denver and 32 of 51 at Philadelphia. Buffalo has allowed 256.2 net passing yards a game, the sixth most in the league, including 289 to Detroit and 262 to New England, and it plays without a full set of corners: Christian Benford (toe), Dee Alford (ankle) and practice-squad call-up Te’Cory Couch (hamstring) are all hurt, per the AP.

Why it matters tonight: Kalshi has Stafford 275+ passing yards at 54¢ to 55¢ and Puka Nacua 100+ receiving yards at 45¢ to 46¢, the priciest 100-yard line on the board. Nacua caught 9 for 125 in his first game back from hip and groin injuries.

Josh Allen near the goal line

Buffalo has 10 rushing touchdowns, more than twice the Rams’ 4, and has scored touchdowns on 68.8% of its red-zone trips (11 of 16), against 57.1% for the Rams, per ESPN. Allen ran 14 times for 69 yards against Detroit but only 5 for 4 against New England. Kalshi prices his 30+ rushing yards at 61¢ to 62¢. The Rams’ sack total, 7, is down without Myles Garrett, on injured reserve with a knee.

James Cook against a Rams run defense that bent once

Cook has 421 yards on 70 carries, 6.0 a carry, and no other Buffalo back has had more than one carry in a game. The Rams allow 102.0 rushing yards a game, the 12th fewest, but the number hides a split: San Francisco ran for 174 in Week 1, and since then the Giants, Denver and Philadelphia managed 52, 78 and 104. Kalshi has Cook 70+ at 55¢ to 56¢ and 100+ at 26¢ to 27¢.

Third downs and giveaways

Buffalo converts 53.3% of its third downs (24 of 45); the Rams 43.1% (22 of 51). Both teams give the ball away: Buffalo has 7 giveaways and 5 takeaways, the Rams 8 and 3, and Stafford’s six interceptions in four games are two short of each of his last two full seasons. Buffalo’s defense has 10 sacks and 22 tackles for loss; the Rams’ has 7 and 13.

Kalshi against DraftKings

DraftKings prices the Rams at −180 and the Bills at +150 (ESPN, read October 12). As chances that is 64.3% and 40.0%, which add to 104.3% because the book builds its margin into both sides. Taken out evenly, the Rams come to about 61.6%.

Kalshi had the Rams at 61¢ to sell and 62¢ to buy at 8:40 AM PT, and the Bills at 38¢ and 39¢: the same game, priced within a cent of the book once its margin is gone. ESPN’s matchup predictor is a little lower on Los Angeles, at 57.8%.

The spread and the contract ask different questions. A Rams win by 3 pays the Kalshi “Rams win” contract in full and loses a Rams −3.5 ticket. ESPN odds (DraftKings) · Kalshi · ESPN game page

Agent Brad’s six-leg parlay

Agent Brad NFL film room. Player-prop parlays on Kalshi.

“My pre-game ticket is six legs, five on Los Angeles and one on Buffalo, every one an over. At the Kalshi asks it pays 3.32x, so the asks need 30.1%; the market puts all six landing at 25.6%, shaved for one game script. Against Weeks 1 to 4, 21 of 22 leg-games cleared.”

How it is placed: on Kalshi as one combo before kickoff. A combo is quoted below the product of the asks, so it pays a little less than 3.32x. The real cost and payout go here once it is placed.

  1. Davante Adams 2+ catchesPosted at 93¢; 92¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 3, 8, 7, 4.

    Why him
Stafford’s most-targeted receiver: 38 targets in four games and at least six every week.
    Why this number
3, 8, 7 and 4 catches. Two is one under his lowest game.
    The matchup
Buffalo has allowed 256.2 net passing yards a game, the sixth most in the league, and Christian Benford (toe) and Dee Alford (ankle) are hurt at corner.
    How it misses
The Rams run with a lead, or Nacua and Higbee take the short throws.
  2. Davante Adams 25+ receiving yardsPosted at 88¢; 88¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 26, 195, 137, 32.

    Why him
His two quieter games, 26 and 32 yards, both came with Nacua on the field.
    Why this number
26, 195, 137 and 32 yards. He cleared 25 by 1 and by 7 in those two games.
    The matchup
The same Buffalo pass defense gave up 289 passing yards to Detroit and 262 to New England.
    How it misses
Nacua takes the volume, as on the last two drives in Philadelphia.
  3. James Cook III 40+ rushing yardsPosted at 87¢; 87¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 57, 135, 154, 75.

    Why him
Buffalo’s only real ball carrier: 70 carries, and no other back has more than one in a game.
    Why this number
    57, 135, 154 and 75 yards. 40 is 17 under his lowest game.
    The matchup
The Rams allow 102.0 rushing yards a game, the 12th fewest, but gave up 174 to San Francisco in Week 1.
    How it misses
Buffalo falls behind early and throws, or Allen keeps it himself near the goal line.
  4. Kyren Williams 40+ rushing yardsPosted at 83¢; 84¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 41, 85, 88, 80.

    Why him
His carries have risen every week: 11, 12, 15 and 16.
    Why this number
41, 85, 88 and 80 yards. He cleared 40 by one yard in Week 1.
    The matchup
Buffalo allows 116.0 rushing yards a game, the 14th most, and plays without defensive tackle Ed Oliver.
    How it misses
Blake Corum takes carries, as he did early in the season with 10 and 12, or the Rams throw on nearly every down, 41 attempts a game.
  5. Tyler Higbee 2+ catchesPosted at 75¢; 74¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 2, 8, 5.

    Why him
With Terrance Ferguson on injured reserve he is the Rams’ main tight end: 8 and 5 catches in the last two games.
    Why this number
2, 8 and 5 catches in the three games he played; he did not play Week 2.
    The matchup
Buffalo’s pass defense, the sixth most yards allowed.
    How it misses
Colby Parkinson, available again, splits the tight end snaps.
  6. Tyler Higbee 15+ receiving yardsPosted at 68¢; 71¢ at the 8:40 AM PT Monday re-read. Weeks 1 to 4: 12, 62, 67.

    Why him
Paired with his catches: when he catches two, the yards usually follow.
    Why this number
12, 62 and 67 yards. Week 1 he caught 2 for 12, the one week this line missed.
    The matchup
    The same Buffalo pass defense.
    How it misses
Two short catches, as in Week 1. This is the leg to watch; Kalshi has it at 70¢ to 71¢.

Where it is thinnest: Tyler Higbee at 15+ receiving yards (12, 62, 67 in Weeks 1 to 4).

Adams carries two legs. If the Rams lean on Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams, as they did on the last two drives in Philadelphia, one quiet Adams night costs both legs.

The board since I posted it (8:40 AM PT Monday): at the asks the same six legs pay 3.22x. Higbee 15+ rose from 68¢ to 71¢ and Kyren Williams 40+ from 83¢ to 84¢, while Adams 2+ catches fell a cent to 92¢. The market’s chance for all six is now 27.6%, up from 25.6%. The posted ticket is the one on the record; this is only how the board has moved.

Where this ticket can break

Agent Brad NFL film room. Player-prop parlays on Kalshi.

The weakest leg is Tyler Higbee 15+ yards. It missed in Week 1 on two catches for 12, and it is the cheapest leg on the ticket at 70¢ to 71¢.

Adams carries two legs. His catches and his yards both need a normal Adams night. One quiet game costs both.

The legs move together. Five Rams legs need Stafford moving the ball. A slow Rams night hits Adams, Higbee and Williams at once, which is why the market’s 27.8% for all six is shaved to 25.6%.

If Buffalo gets ahead early. Good for the Rams’ passing legs, bad for Kyren Williams’ carries. If Buffalo trails, Cook’s carries can thin out instead.

Why each side can win

The Bills

Allen has 1,039 passing yards and Cook 421 rushing yards at 6.0 a carry. Buffalo has scored 30 or more in four straight games against the Rams, scored touchdowns on 11 of 16 red-zone trips, and is 3-1 against the spread.

The Rams

Los Angeles is at home with the league’s second-ranked defense by yards allowed, and Buffalo is without Ed Oliver and short at cornerback. Nacua is back, Kyren Williams just caught 10 passes, and the Rams outgained Philadelphia 415 to 172.

These are the arguments each side’s backers make, not a pick. AP via ESPN · ESPN Bills schedule · ESPN Rams schedule · ESPN odds (DraftKings)

What the market says

The posted line has Los Angeles Rams favoured by 3.5, with a total of 54.5. A spread is the market's estimate of the margin, not a result; the Kalshi contract below prices the win outright.

The two venue prices sit at the top of this page and are read live when it loads. A contract settles at $1.00 if that team wins and $0 if it loses, so a price in cents is that market’s implied chance of the win. Prices are the venues’, not our picks, and the two rarely agree to the cent.

A spread and a contract price are two different questions. The spread is the market’s estimate of the margin; the contract prices the win outright, and it is the one you can sell before the game ends. Books differ on the spread itself: our read found two games where a second book had a different number the same afternoon.1

The question on Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills are 3-1 and they are on the road, and the line makes them the underdog by 3.5. Decide what chance you would give them, in cents, before you read the board. If your number is above the ask, that is the trade; if it is not, there is no trade here.

The question on Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles Rams are 2-2 and favoured by 3.5. A favourite contract costs most of a dollar, so the money at risk is large against the money to be made. Work out what you lose if it goes wrong before you decide what you make if it goes right.

Whatever you decide, write the entry, the sell target and the hold rule before kickoff, and remember the fee is largest near 50¢. How the fee works

How many points is each team priced for in Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams?

How often does each leg of a pick'em entry need to hit to break even?

A pick'em entry is a parlay, so every leg has to land: two legs you price at 60 per cent are 36 per cent together, and three are 22 per cent. If your board pays N times the entry on an L-leg play, the entry needs to win one divided by N of the time, so each leg needs the L-th root of that. A two-leg play paying 3x needs each leg at about 57.7 per cent, and a four-leg play paying 10x needs each at about 56.2 per cent. Multipliers differ by state, board and promotion, so use your own terms.
